Welcome to year 5! I hope you had a good summer. The children have settled in brilliantly and are already showing a wonderful, positive attitude to their learning. We have had a great first week learning about each other and setting the expectations for our learning this year.
This term we will be doing PE on Monday and Friday afternoons. Children need to wear blue/black shorts and a plain white T-shirt (no logos). They should bring sensible outdoor shoes on Mondays as we will be doing Tag rugby this term. On Fridays, we will be doing dance in the hall in bare feet. Children with shoulder length hair must have it tied up and all jewellery must be removed.
Homework will be sent home on a Friday to be returned on Wednesday. Children will be set either a piece of writing, a reading comprehension or a maths task to complete, along with spellings and weekly times tables for a test on Thursday. Please continue to read with your child as often as possible and record this in their reading record. When children finish a book they will be given the opportunity to write a book review for display. There will be prizes for children who complete 10 book reviews!
This week we have sent home spellings for the term, a times table grid, corresponding division tables and a maths ‘Key Instant Recall Facts’ sheet. These are best practiced in small, regular sessions (5 minutes, several times a week). Each week we will focus on one set of spellings and one table with corresponding division facts, which will be stuck into your child’s homework book. Please feel free to move up through the spellings/tables at a pace which suits you and your child.
Don’t forget you can make an appointment to see me after school on any day except Wednesday or Thursday if you have any concerns. Also you are welcome to visit us on Thursday mornings from 8:40 for stay and read or stay and count.
We are looking forward to working with you and your children throughout the year and hope to see you all in class soon.
